Staten Island’s Green Energy Symposium: Inspiring the Next Generation

On September 26, 2024, the Staten Island Green Energy Symposium took place at Ferry Hawk Stadium, proving that even rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of attendees eager to explore a sustainable future. Hosted by Youth Wins, the event was a showcase of innovation and opportunity, with the Staten Island Industrial Alliance (SIIA) and May Ship Repair (MSR) playing key roles in the discussions.

Nadia Adam, Executive Director of SIIA and Director of External Affairs at MSR, participated in two pivotal panels that highlighted the intersection of maritime expertise and renewable energy. The first panel, titled “Working in the Green Industry” was led by students from NYCID and featured industry leaders, including Boone Davis, President & CEO of Atlantic Offshore Terminals; Dean Santa, Executive Officer of Solanta; and Antuan Cannon, VP of Talent Development & Innovation at Willdan Energy Solutions.

Students engaged with panelists, eager to learn about career pathways in the green economy. Boone Davis shared insights into the realities of being a CEO, emphasizing the importance of time management: “You can’t clock in and clock out; your business is always top of mind.” His advice resonated with the audience, underscoring the dedication required to succeed in leadership roles.

Antuan Cannon highlighted the significance of community connections, stating, “There are great community-based organizations that help connect students with companies looking for labor and talent. Always explore these opportunities.” Boone encouraged students by saying, “Just keep going; all experience is good experience,” inspiring them to embrace every learning opportunity.

In a separate panel titled "Building the Future: The Role of Shipbuilding in Offshore Wind," Nadia Adam discussed the critical role of shipbuilding in developing offshore wind farms. She explained the types of vessels needed to support these operations and detailed advancements in welding technology that are shaping the future of the maritime industry.

“Automation and advanced welding techniques are revolutionizing our industry,” Nadia stated, highlighting the exciting opportunities for innovation and growth in the maritime sector. Her passion for sustainability was evident as she emphasized MSR's commitment to adapting to the evolving energy landscape.

Sajira Premabandu, a board member of SIIA, played a vital role in connecting with young attendees at the SIIA table. His hands-on approach provided valuable insights into students' aspirations and their understanding of the green economy, emphasizing the need for mentorship and guidance in shaping the future workforce. “Listening to their perspectives gives us a clearer picture of what these students are looking for,” Sajira remarked, reflecting on the meaningful exchanges throughout the day.

The event's atmosphere was further enhanced by a branded step-and-repeat backdrop donated by SIIA members, which served as a vibrant focal point for attendees to capture their moments at the symposium. This backdrop symbolized not only a commitment to sustainability but also a community united in its efforts to foster a greener future.

As the symposium concluded, Nadia Adam delivered a powerful call to action, urging collaboration and innovation as essential pathways for Staten Island to emerge as a leader in the renewable energy sector. “By investing in our workforce and industries, we can become a beacon of change,” she declared.

The Staten Island Green Energy Symposium was more than just an event; it was a celebration of hope, collaboration, and the promise of a sustainable tomorrow. With organizations like SIIA and MSR at the helm, Staten Island is poised to navigate the waves of change, steering toward a future powered by innovation and community engagement.
